we understand that Health and Physical Education (HPE) supports the development of the whole child—physically
socially
and emotionally. In the early years
our focus is on building students’ fundamental motor skills
including running
hopping
jumping
skipping
catching
throwing
kicking
rolling
balancing
twisting
and turning.
These essential skills form the foundation for more complex and coordinated movement patterns. As students progress through Prep to Year 2
they begin linking basic skills into simple movement sequences and start applying them in modified games and physical activities. In addition to skill development
we place importance on personal and interpersonal learning
including cooperation
fair play
and self-confidence.
Years 3 – 6
Building on the foundation established in the early years
students in Years 3–6 begin engaging in major games and structured sports. They develop a deeper understanding of game rules
strategies
teamwork
and sportsmanship. Students also represent the school in interschool competitions as both individuals and team members.
Further development of fundamental motor skills is supported through ongoing sessions
alongside aerobic fitness and strength conditioning. Our HPE program encourages personal improvement
Tucker Road Bentleigh Primary School is part of the Moorabbin District within the School Sport Victoria (SSV) network. Students have the opportunity to participate in individual events such as swimming (Term 1)
cross-country (Term 2)
and athletics (Terms 3
4). Our school also fields teams for summer and winter interschool sports
with weekly Friday morning competitions on a home-and-away basis. Successful individuals and teams can progress to regional
divisional
and state-level competitions.
Personal and Interpersonal Development
We place a strong emphasis on values such as sportsmanship
effort
perseverance
safety
and teamwork. These are embedded in every PE session. In the early years
students also begin learning about the body and basic muscle groups
understanding their function and how to strengthen them. Concepts around healthy eating and active lifestyles are interwoven throughout the program
encouraging students to make informed choices about their health and wellbeing.
